Rhode Island’s Auto Insurance Regulations And Common Policies

Rhode Island uses a tort system which is utilized when settling losses due to auto accidents. The tort system is where you purchase liability insurance that protects “other” drivers who you could be legally bound to answer to if there is considerable damage or medical expenses.

In short, when you purchase your liability policy you transfer the “liability” under the tort laws to the insurance firm, for example, the insurance steps into your shoes and pays for damages. The minimum car insurance requirements for Rhode Islands are as follows:

Minimum Car Insurance Requirement for Rhode Island

CoverageRhode Island Minimum Liability CoverageRecommended Auto Insurance Coverage
Bodily Injury Protection$25,000 / $50,000$100,000 / $300,000
Property Damage$25,000 $50,000
Uninsured Motorist*Optional$100,000 / $300,000
ComprehensiveOptional$250 deductible
CollisionOptional$500 deductible
Medical PaymentOptional$5,000

*Uninsured Motorist is a requirement unless declined in writing. Typically this is wrapped into liability and property damage coverage.

Note: Approximately 17 percent of drivers are uninsured in the State of Rhode Island. If you are in an automobile accident with an uninsured motorist you will not be covered if you decided to decline the coverage in writing.

Bodily Injury Liability

Bodily injury liability covers the hospital bills of the driver and passengers of the other automobile. Under the minimum needed coverage, the insurance firm will cover up to $25,000 for a single person and up to $50,000 for multiple passengers for a single car accident.

Property Damage Liability

Property damage liability covers repairs to private and public property like places of business, guard rails, and road signs as well as the other drivers vehicle. Minimum coverage will make allowances for a maximum payout of $25,000 per accident.

The set limit would be 25/50/25 or in insurance terms that is the minimum liability cover and the maximum payout in thousands the insurance will cover if you have purchased only the minimum.

Uninsured Motorist Protection (UM)

Other cover that is required (can be decline in writing) when driving in RI is Uninsured Motorist Protection or (UM) since the state has a high density of drivers and as many as two out of ten drivers at any given time are uninsured in the state. If you get “only” the minimum liability cover then you can decline to purchase uninsured motorist protection.

What is Covered with Uninsured Motorist Protection

UM cover is going to cover you in the event you are in an accident with an uninsured motorist. In other words, UM covers what the other driver should have had for minimum coverage when in an automobile accident. If you have an accident with an uninsured driver, after payment to for damages, your insurance company is likely to sue the other driver for the money paid to you because of negligence. Other optional coverage to consider is comprehensive, collision, medical payment cover, rental reimbursement, and towing.
