History & Driving Laws

Florence was surveyed in 1818 by Ferdinand Sannoner, the Italian surveyor. He surveyed the land for the Cypress Land Company. Sannoner named the city after the capital of Tuscany in Italy. Florence was officially incorporated in 1826.

The city is the hometown of several renowned personalities including W.C. Handy, Father of the Blues, and Sam Phillips, record producer who discovered the American cultural icon Elvis Presley.

Other notable attractions include, Indian Mound Museum, Pope's Tavern Museum, W.C. Handy Home, Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum House, Funland Water Park, Joe Wheeler State Park.

Florence is home to many parks and open spaces including North Florence Park, Cox Creek Park, Wildwood Park, North Alabama State Fair Park, and McFarland Park. The Walnut Street Historic District and Sannoner Historic District are also worth visiting.

Driving Laws

Drivers in the state of Alabama will also need to contend with a recent law pertaining to vehicles and drivers without liability insurance. The state will use a state of the art insurance verification technology that will automatically check records from insurance company providers and check and see if drivers have insurance.

Anytime a police officer issues a ticket or when officials are renewing automobile tags, the Alabama state computer system will do a random check to search for motorists who are no longer insured.

A large part of the reason Alabama is undertaking this endeavor is because more than 20% of drivers (6th highest in the country) do not currently comply with the mandatory auto insurance law.

Alabama is also making sure the law hurts your pocketbook if you decide not to abide by it. First offenders will pay a fine of up to $500 and subsequent violations will cost upwards of $1,000. Too many offenses and you will find your vehicle registrations suspended requiring you to pay up to $400 for reinstatement!

Before buying a car shop for quotes to see how much your premium may be.
If you have an older model vehicle consider dropping optional coverage such as comprehensive and collision.
Do some research and take a few minutes to learn the minimum coverage and other factors which apply in your state.
