History & Driving Laws

Hoover was incorporated as a city in 1967 with approximately 400 residents. It was named in honor of William H. Hoover, owner of a local insurance company.

Until the early 1980s, Hoover was mostly a residential community. The Riverchase Galleria shopping hotel-office complex was opened in 1986 and increased the tax revenue of the city significantly.

It is one of the largest shopping centers in the Southeast and one of the largest mixed-use centers in the U.S.

Today, Hoover has over 80,000 residents with 1.2 million in the Birmingham-Hoover-Talladega area.

Notable attractions include, Birmingham Zoo, Oak Mountain State Park, Iron & Steel Museum of Alabama, Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington, and the Robert R. Meyer Planetarium.

Just outside Hoover are the award-winning golf course at Ross Bridge on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Regions Park in Hoover is home to the Birmingham Barons baseball team and the annual Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament.

The city also features Aldridge Gardens, formerly a private 30-acre estate that is now open to the public, and the Moss Rock Preserve, which has more than 250 acres of trees, wildlife, and natural rock formations.

Various outdoor activities and facilities are available at the city's numerous community and sports parks and lakes. Historic districts include Park Avenue, which has 51 structures built during the early twentieth century and the post-World War II period, and Shades Crest Road Historical District.

Theft & Crime

The vehicle theft rate in Hoover is higher than the national average across all communities in America although at 30 crimes per one thousand residents, it is not among the communities with the highest crime rate.

The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Hoover is 1 in 33. Based on police department data via the FBI, Hoover is not one of the safest communities in America.

Relative to Alabama, Hoover has a crime rate that is higher than 65% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes.

Most insurers are going to look at the crime data statistics to determine your rate for comprehensive coverage. Typically, the higher the crime data the higher you pay for comprehensive coverage.
