History, Property Crime, & Driving Laws

The area now known as Phenix City is actually a consolidation of two towns.

Show Content

In the late 19th century, the town of Girard comprised mostly of the present-day downtown area of Phenix City, and was mostly in Lee County. In the 20th century, the towns of Girard and Phenix City merged to form the present-day Phenix City.

U.S. Secretary of War Henry Stimson called it “the wickedest city in America” during the 1940's and 1950's. One of the first communities to reinstate the sale of beer after the repeal of Prohibition, by the mid-1950s Phenix City was known for its gin joints, gambling and bawdy houses, and corrupt government. The locals knew the town as “Sin City.”

During the 1940s, Phenix City increasingly came under the control of organized crime bosses who ran gambling, narcotics, and prostitution operations throughout the city. These men rigged local and state elections and held important leadership positions in the Chamber of Commerce, school and hospital boards, and several service organizations.

Concerned citizens began to try to clean up the illegal activities in the city, but were met with violent resistance from the gambling interests. Hugh Bentley, a local businessman and Sunday school teacher, organized a group to clean up the city and had his house bombed as a result.

Today it is a nice place to live and work with nearly 40,000 residents. Business Week magazine rated the city as the “Nation’s Best Affordable Suburb” in which to raise a family in 2007.

Notable attractions include, Lakeview Golf Course, Parkview Shopping Center, Westside Church, Lake View Memory Gardens, and Asbury Park Lake.

Property Crime
The local auto theft rate for Phenix City is 5.91 per 1,000 vehicles or nearly three times the state average of 2.31 stolen vehicles per 1,000.

Since the automobile theft rate is higher than the state average this will affect the amount you pay for comprehensive auto insurance. Please see table below.
