Safeway Insurance has been in business for over 60 years and offers basic vehicle coverage for customers in 12 states.

Over 300,000 customers have purchased an insurance plan with Safeway, making them a sizable insurance company.

Although Safeway is a relatively large insurance company, they don’t directly offer information on their website about their products and services. This can be a frustrating experience when shopping around online for vehicle insurance.

In this guide, you will receive all the information you need to make a decision if Safeway Insurance is right for you.

This guide covers the cost, financial strength, and overall performance of the company.

About Safeway Insurance

Safeway was founded in 1959 and is headquartered in Westmont, Ill. They are one of the largest privately-owned insurance companies in America. Safeway operates through regional offices throughout the states where they offer coverage.

Although Safeway started out by selling home insurance, they only sell vehicle insurance at this time.

You can find Safeway auto coverage in 12 states:

  • California
  • Texas
  • Tennessee
  • New Mexico

Insurance Coverage Offered by Safeway

Safeway only offers the most basic of vehicle insurance coverage, which will suit most customers’ needs. This includes liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage. The coverage offered meets the mandatory minimum for all states.

Safeway also offers uninsured motorist coverage, which covers injury and damage done by another driver who is not properly insured.

Safeway insurance has personal injury protection and medical payments as required by law in all states.

Cost of Safeway Auto Insurance

For basic vehicle coverage, Safeway is more expensive than its competitors, but not by much.

There are several factors that determine the cost of an insurance policy. The main factors include:

  • Marital status
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Your location
  • Credit report
  • Past driving record

For a liability policy, Safeway averages about $700 per year. This is higher than State Farm and Progressive but is more affordable than GEICO or Allstate.

A full-coverage policy is around $1,500 per year, and a full coverage policy with one accident is close to $2,000 per year.

The jump in price with one accident on record is lower than the average price jump with other insurance companies.

Overall, Safeway Insurance prices are around the median, compared to its competitors.

Financial Strength

According to A.M. Best ratings, Safeway has been given an “A” (Excellent) grade and is reported as being stable. They have been reported through A.M. Best since 1971 and have always held a good rating.

The financial reports offered by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners are very healthy. Currently, Safeway Insurance has a capital surplus of $519,053,530 in 2022. Their net income over the past three years has been positive and has grown year over year.

Overall, the financial strength of Safeway is very strong.

Safeway Insurance Available Discounts

This company is not known for its insurance discounts. Their very limited list of discounts includes a safe driver’s discount, a no claims discount, and a multi-car policy discount.

There may be additional discounts available through your local insurance broker.

Safeway Insurance Customer Reviews

The overall customer reviews across several platforms are subpar for Safeway but are much higher than usual for auto insurance companies.

Typically, auto insurance companies accrue very negative reviews online. This is because people tend to leave reviews when they have experienced dissatisfaction, as opposed to leaving positive reviews.

Safeway Insurance comes in at an average of 3.5 stars, which is higher than comparable vehicle insurance companies.

National Complaint Index Report

However, Safeway has accrued several confirmed complaints with NAIC.

The National Complaint Index Report shows that Safeway has a complaint index of 3.96, which is close to four times higher than the national average.

There has been a downtrend in complaints for the company. In 2019, there were 19 confirmed complaints, whereas in 2021 there were 11 complaints.

Among the detailed reviews left by prior customers, many have noted poor customer service as one of the primary complaints. Many have reported that Safeway did not cover damages from accidents, and there are several serious allegations against Safeway.

Many have stated that drivers with Safeway coverage who have been involved in an accident will not cover the other party. There are other well-known auto insurance companies that are best for paying claims.

There are mixed reviews for Safeway Insurance with the Better Business Bureau. Since Safeway operates out of many states and is not a national company, there are 15 separate BBB company listings. The ratings for these listings range from A+ all the way to F. You will have to look up your local Safeway office to see their regional BBB rating.

Safeway Insurance Apps and Tech

There is currently no phone app offered by Safeway, and their website is very basic. Online management of policies is very limited, along with any information available about the company and what they offer to customers.

There is a very basic online portal on their website where customers can print their insurance cards, check claims status, and make payments. Safeway Auto Insurance phone number is (630) 887-8300.

The Conclusion About Safeway Insurance in 2022

Safeway Insurance has been established for a very long time and is the largest family-owned insurance company in the U.S.

They operate through independent insurance agents and do not offer online quotes or information about their company on their website.

Insurance coverage policies are very limited through Safeway but will cover the basic needs of most drivers and are compliant with all legal basic requirements.

The cost of Safeway insurance is about average compared to its competitors. It does not raise premiums as drastically as other insurance companies do after an accident.

One of the best factors about Safeway Insurance is its very strong financial health. A.M. Best gives the company an “A”. Their financial report is very strong and has been for several years.

They do have many formal complaints against them compared to their competitors and are almost four times higher than the national average.

Customer reviews paint a mixed picture. There are serious issues reported with Safeway, but they do hold an average of 3.5 stars across the board.

Don’t expect to have much support for your policy through online apps or the website. Only the very basics are available, such as bill pay and access to downloading insurance cards.

Overall, Safeway Insurance is a mixed bag. There are probably better options for you to obtain a good insurance policy with better discounts and customer support. A rising favorite is Liberty Mutual car insurance.
