Driving without insurance in NY
There are severe penalties in NY when driving without insurance especially when there has been a car accident. Anybody caught in an accident while uninsured could lose their driver’s license and registration for a minimum of a year.
This is the penalty no matter whether the uninsured party is not at-fault, as the penalty is imposed on whichever automobile owner is not carrying insurance.
When a driver has lost their registration they are required to turn over the license plate to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and they will be fine $1,500 plus the driver will have to pay $750 reinstatement fee.
Be sure not to let your insurance lapse even if you are not driving the vehicle since the penalty for driving with lapsed insurance is $8 to $12 each day which can add up to hundreds of dollars if the lapse period is only sixty days.
