Depending on your age and location, the overall cheapest auto insurance carriers in Delaware are Grange, Progressive, and 21st Century.
All three insurers can offer quotes from 17 to 34% lower than the median rate for drivers of similar age and profile.
Travelers and Titan are two other carriers to put on your bucket list to get quotes.
Both can offer quotes from 12 to 22% lower than the median rate.
Another carrier that did exceptionally well is Atlantic States or known as Donegal Group.
They can offer quotes from 10 to well over 20% cheaper than the median quote for drivers.
This article will cover the minimum coverage requirements, least expensive insurance carriers in Delaware, and cost-saving tips to help you lower your monthly premium.
If you would like to skip to a certain portion of the article, there is a table of contents down a little and to the right.
Minimum Liability Coverage Requirement in Delaware
The minimum coverage for the state of Delaware is as follows:
Coverage | Delaware Minimum Liability Coverage | Recommended Coverage |
---|---|---|
Bodily Injury Protection | $15,000 / $30,000 | $100,000 / $300,000 |
Property Damage | $10,000 | $50,000 |
Personal Injury Protection | $15,000 / $30,000* | $100,000 / $300,000 |
Uninsured Motorist | $10,000* | $100,000 / $300,000 |
Comprehensive Coverage | N/A | $500 deductible |
Collision Coverage | N/A | $500 deductible |
*Personal Injury Protection and Uninsured Motorist Protection are not mandatory in the State of Delaware. However, you have to decline the coverage in writing. Remember this if you are on a budget.
No-Fault State
Delaware is a “no-fault” state.
No-fault implies that each individual’s insurer will cover their costs if they are in an accident in the hopes that it’ll reduce the number of legal actions filed by other drivers.
Note: The cheapest car insurance companies for a 25-year-old driver in Delaware are Grange, Progressive, and 21st Century. I queried each at $2,029, $2,032, and $2,065 respectfully per year. All three carriers are 33% cheaper than the average premium of $3,099 per year for similar profile drivers.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Since the state is “no-fault,” drivers are required (though it can be declined in writing) to carry Personal Injury Protection or PIP coverage.
PIP insurance is coverage to help pay for any doctor’s expenses or, in the unlikely event, death expenses for the insured person.
There are exceptions to the rule for Delaware.
Note: For a 30-year-old drive, Delaware’s the cheapest car insurance companies are Grange, Progressive, and 21st Century. I queried each at $1,730, $1,735, and $1,787 per year for full coverage. All three carriers are 34% cheaper than the average premium of $2,798.
If the cost of medical bills or the cost of property damages exceeds a certain amount.
Or if the injuries to the person are extremely high, the “at-fault” party will be required to cover the costs.
Either through their own insurance firm or personal expense, depending on if they have the coverage to help with the bills.
The state of Delaware also requires its motorists to carry at least 15/30/10 of bodily injury liability and property damage liability protection.
Note: The cheapest car insurance companies for 35-year-old drivers are Grange, Atlantic States, and Progressive. I queried each at $1,432, $1,436, and $1,440 respectfully per year. Other companies to put on your list of quotes are 21st Century and Travelers. I queried each at $1,454 and $1,498 respectfully per year. All five companies are 30% lower than the average premium for similar age drivers.
Bodily Injury Liability
Covers medical bills for passengers in the other vehicle.
With minimum coverage, the insurance company will pay up to $15,000 for a single person and up to $30,000 for all other cars.
This coincides with the numbers (15 & 30) in the table above.
Note: For a 45-year-old driver, the cheapest car insurance companies are Grange, Atlantic States, and 21st Century. I queried each at $1,070, $1,076, and $1,089 per year for full coverage. All three carriers are 32% lower than the median quote of $1,628 for similar age drivers. Other carriers offering inexpensive quotes are Progressive and Travelers. Each queried at $1,098 and $1,112 per year.
Property Damage Liability
Property damage is any damages to the other person’s vehicle, buildings, and road signs, for example.
Under the minimum coverage, the insurer will pay up to $10,000 for damages.
This coincides with the number (10) in the 15/30/10. The numbers are always in the thousands.
To make it easier for bodily injury, the minimum is $15,000 for the driver in the other car and $30,000 for the passengers in the other car.
Property damage minimum is $10,000.
Note: The least expensive auto insurance companies in Delaware for a 55-year-old driver are Atlantic States, Grange, and Progressive. I queried each at $741, $742, and $754 per year for full coverage, 32% cheaper than the average premium of $1,083 for similar profile drivers. Other carriers to put on your list of quotes are Travelers and 21st Century. Both offers quote over 26% lower than the median price.
Who Has the Cheapest Auto Insurance in Delaware?
Below is a list of the cheapest to more costly carriers from 25 to 55 years of age.
Overall the three lowest price insurers are Grange, Progressive, and 21st Century.
Depending on the region you live in, you can get quotes from 17% to over 30% cheaper than the median quote for similar profile drivers.
At times Atlantic States and Travelers are cheaper than the top three for 35 years of age and up.
Both Atlantic States (owned by Donegal Group) and Travelers can offer cheaper coverage from 12% to 22% than average.
There are a few things to keep in mind when you are getting quotes.
Your location is going to be a big factor when insurers determine your rate.
Normally, in the larger cities, your premium is higher since there is a greater risk.

Best Insurers by Consumer Rating, Complaints, & Rate Change
At times you may want to check if a company has any complaints or their rating from AM Best.
Below is a list of the best insurers by complaints, rate change, and consumer ratings.
Typically, insurers with higher written premiums will have more complaints.
This is normal, and you shouldn’t be alarmed by it.
The data compiled in the list is from AM Best, JP Power & Associates, and Delaware’s department of insurance.
From my results, the best insurers by consumer satisfaction are Allstate, 21st Century, and Farmers.
MetLife, Hartford, and Titan are very competitive, and it would be smart to get quotes from them.
If you are in the market for the least expensive car insurance, getting quotes from all companies is the best strategy.

Uninsured Motorist Protection
Uninsured motorist protection is a coverage you may want to consider since many drivers in cities such as Wilmington, Dover, and Newark drive without proper coverage.
Many drivers surrounding the state are not properly covered or are completely uninsured.
Also, there could be many out-of-state drivers through Delaware, which may not have proper coverage.
Average Rate by City
Below is the average premium by the city in Delaware.
Location is a primary factor when insurers determine the price of your premium.
When I did my analysis, the price varied from $1,700 to over $2,000.
Which is a $300 variance from one city to the next.
If you move to another city or zip code, you may see an increase or decrease in your premium.
If you have substantially higher quotes than those listed below,w you may have a traffic violation or poor credit.
And if you have a history of filing claims.
The most effective way to keep your premium low is to maintain a good driving history and file claims only when necessary.
