South Carolina Cheapest Auto Insurance & Requirements

Are you currently insured?
Yes No

Updated November 3rd, 2020

The overall cheapest car insurance companies by price in South Carolina are Southern Farm Bureau, State Auto, and USAA.

If you are a driver with a decent record, you should be able to get quotes from 21 to 35% lower than the median rate for drivers of similar age.

Other competitive insurers in South Carolina are State Farm, Allstate, National Grange Mutual, and Encompass.

Depending on the zip code you reside, any of those carriers can offer coverage from 12 to 28% lower than their competitors.

In this article, I will cover the minimum requirements, the least expensive insurers by age, and mention a few cost-saving strategies to help you lower your premium.

If you would like to skip to a certain portion of the article, please use the table of contents down a little and to the right.

Bodily Injury Liability

If you have purchased the minimum requirements, the maximum payout is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

This will cover the driver’s medical expenses and the passengers of the other automobile in the event of a vehicle accident.

Lowest premium choices for a 25 year old in South Carolina.Note: As illustrated, I found quotes clustering between $1,754 and $1,902 for a 25-year-old driver in South Carolina. To get cheap car insurance quotes, the best option is with Southern Farm Bureau. With a price of $1,754 per year. For additional details, please see the table below.

Property Damage Liability

The insurer’s maximum payout for damage done to the other vehicle, private and public property, such as traffic signs, guard rails, and places of business is $25,000 per accident.

Cheapest premium options by price for a 30 year old.Note: I found the cheapest quotes are with Southern Farm Bureau for a 30-year-old driver. Two competitive companies are State Auto and USAA. More details in the rate table below.

Uninsured Motorist Protection

Although it is not required, it is recommended to get uninsured motorist protection (UM) insurance if you are involved in an accident with an inadequately insured driver.

UM will pay what the other driver should have “if” they would have had coverage.

The driver without coverage can be sued by the insurer, which had to pay out claims for damages.

Low-cost auto premium prices for a 35 year old driver.Note: A 35-year-old driver can find the lowest quotes with Southern Farm Bureau, State Auto, and USAA in South Carolina. I queried each at $1,354, $1,387, an $1,390 respectfully per year. More details in the table below.

Comprehensive, Collision, & Medical Expense Coverage

There is optional coverage available such as comprehensive, collision, and medical expense benefits.

However, there are some things you may want to consider when you are comparing insurance quotes in South Carolina.

If your vehicle is finance or lease, you may be required to get comprehensive and collision coverage.

Lowest price insurer options for a 40 year old driver in SC.Note: As illustrated, quotes clustered between $1,002 and $1,088 for a 40 y/o driver. To get cheap car insurance quotes, start with Southern Farm Bureau, State Auto, and USAA. I queried each at $1,002, $1,009, and $1,054 respectfully per year.

Cheapest Auto Insurance by Age & Rate

There are 17 insurers I queried for drivers from 25 to 55 years of age.

If you are a driver under the age of 25, your quotes will be significantly higher.

From the 17 carriers, the cheapest overall throughout the age spectrum are Southern Farm Bureau, State Auto, and USAA.

Each of the carriers is 21 to 35% cheaper than the median rate for drivers of the same age and profile as detailed in the table.

Only former military, spouses, and family members of the military can get coverage through USAA.

Three other slightly higher options are State Farm, Progressive, and Allstate.

Each is 12 to 28% lower than the median rate for drivers of the same age in South Carolina.

If you are shopping for a cheaper price, you want to compare 3 or more quotes and compare the coverage type.

If you are on a budget and understand the coverage, then go for minimum liability coverage.

However, if you have a lease or a loan on the vehicle, you may not be able to get liability-only coverage.

Best Insurers by Consumer Rating, Premium Change, & Complaints

Below is a list of insurers by consumer rating, rate change over 12 to 18 months, and the number of complaints.

The amount of written premiums is included to coincide with the number of complaints.

For example, a carrier with a high amount of complaints but a low amount of written premiums is a company to further check into if you plan to do business with them.

In the list below, all of the companies are well funded and have a good rating through JD Power & Associates and AM Best.

All have the financial wherewithal to pay out a large claim.

The rate change for the insurers below ranges from 1.7 to 2.1%, which is relatively low compared to other states.

On the other hand, if you get a traffic violation, your rates can spike and, in some instances, significantly.

The consumer rating is included and is an average from reputable online sources.

Each of the companies scored well by all consumer rating standards.

Larger companies, such as USAA, GEICO, and Progressive, usually have a better consumer rating than smaller companies, such as State Auto or National Grange Mutual.

This doesn’t affect the price of a premium.

In some cases, a smaller local company can offer lower prices, such as Southern Farm Bureau.

Average Premium by City

The average premium price by the city in South Carolina can vary significantly.

Location is a primary factor when insurers determine your rate.

Below is a list of small to large cities throughout the state by median price.

This includes all drivers from 16 to 65 years of age.

Typically the more populated the city, the more you may pay for premium.

For smaller cities, premiums’ price can be 12 to 22% lower than in larger cities.

If your premium is much higher than the quotes listed below, you have some options to check.

At your age, if you are a young driver, you are going to pay significantly more.

If you had a lapse in a premium or no prior coverage.

Any traffic violations, significant or not, they can impact your rate.

If you have a low credit score or have a large number of miles driven per year.
