According to numerous reports, Ford has built a compact hybrid prototype that currently goes under the codename C240, and could be expanded into a family of vehicles, with a couple of different body styles.
It is supposed to be based on the new C2 compact platform, that will be also used for future Focus, Kuga, Escape, and C-Max models.
Reuters reported that Ford plans to build 120,000 units of the new hybrid model annually, at the company’s assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan.
Hyundai Ioniq Now Available
Hyundai, for its part, has been testing four different versions of an Elantra GT equipped with the company’s new hybrid powertrain technology. This suggests that Hyundai also plans to offer the new hybrid model in more than one body style.
It will be based on the Blue-Will Concept – the Korean car maker’s first hybrid – that was unveiled at the 2009 Seoul Motor Show, and was powered by a gasoline direct injection 1.6-liter engine, along with a 100-kW electric motor, for a fuel economy of 106 mpg.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle Market Share up to year 2015.
Since Toyota has the majority of the “HEV” market since with little competition.
Later Ford & Hyundai Hybrid Models Couldn’t Compete Against Toyota’s Prius
If both Ford and Hyundai want their new hybrids to truly stand a chance against the fourth-generation Prius, which Toyota rolled out in early 2016, they will have to be much better than their previous gasoline-electric models, considering their somewhat mixed performance in the global market.
Sales of Ford’s C-Max Hybrid fell almost 30% this year, but the hybrid version of the Fusion sedan fared better, with a 24% increase over the first six months of 2016, compared to the same period of last year.
Final Thoughts
Hyundai, on the other hand, has never been a force to be reckoned with in the hybrid vehicle market, with the Sonata as its only hybrid model so far.
This is something that the South Korean manufacturer is looking to change in the future, as many other car makers are working on development of hybrid car technology.
In an effort to meet tough fuel economy and emissions standards that are being introduced in many countries across the world, making for a fierce competition in the global hybrid car market.
