  • Farm Bureau, USAA, American Family, and Erie insurance companies are the best companies for SR-22 insurance
  • SR-22 insurance can be mandated by courts or the state in which you live
  • SR-22 is not an actual insurance policy, but a certificate of financial responsibility

Auto insurance rates vary from state to state, and this is because each state has different requirements for the minimum amount of insurance that a driver needs to have.

Insurance companies try to avoid risk; a very common risk is a high-risk driver. This is a driver with DUI or DWI convictions, multiple accidents, or multiple traffic offenses. Sometimes when there is a high-risk driver, courts will order a driver to align themselves with an insurance company and file an SR-22 insurance form.

What are the best insurance companies for SR-22 insurance?

SR-22 insurance is not an actual insurance policy. It is a certificate of financial responsibility required for some drivers by their state or court order. The purpose of an SR-22 is to serve as proof that an auto insurance policy meets the minimum liability coverage that is required by that specific state’s law.

Filing requirements differ from state to state due to DUI or DWI convictions, accidents caused by drivers without valid insurance, reinstatement of a suspended or revoked license, or multiple traffic offenses in a short period of time.

There are four insurance companies that are considered the best auto insurance companies for an SR-22. The best SR-22 insurance companies include Farm Bureau, Erie, USAA, and American Family.

Erie Insurance Company

Erie Auto Insurance provides auto insurance, and coverage for if you have a motorcycle, snowmobile, RV, or ATV.

The company prides itself on the way it handles accidents, foul balls, and liability mishaps.

For liability mishaps, Erie offers an umbrella policy that gives you an extra layer of protection over and above the limits in an auto, home, or boat policy. They focus on “foul balls” by offering auto policies that cover windshield and glass repairs as part of their comprehensive coverage.  As for accidents, Erie’s auto policy could protect you in case you give permission to a friend or relative to borrow your car and they get in a fender bender.

Erie Insurance offers different products that its clients can choose from to add on to their policies:

  • Pet coverage: If your pet gets hurt in an accident while riding in your car, Erie will help cover vet treatment costs
  • Roadside & Rental Bundles: Your roadside emergency will be handled and rental car coverage will be provided should you need it
  • Personal item coverage: Erie will help cover the loss of clothing, luggage, and personal belongings that are inside a car that is already insured by Erie.
  • Auto glass repair: This is included in the comprehensive coverage option and waives the deductible for repairs. You can also add full window glass and this waives the deductible regardless of repair or replacement. Each option provides new wiper blades if your windshield needs to be replaced.
  • Locksmith services: Locksmith services will be covered up to $75 and represent a part of comprehensive coverage.

Erie Insurance’s SR-22

On behalf of their customer, Erie Insurance offers SR-22 to drivers who are known to be high-risk. Erie will file the form with the state and provide the insurance coverage necessary to meet the state’s SR-22 requirements. USAA’s SR-22

Although USAA does provide SR-22 insurance, they only service military personnel and their families; it could provide SR-22 insurance, but does not guarantee that it will provide coverage to all drivers who file.

A $25 filing fee will be charged and can go upward of $50 depending on the severity of the violation and the state you reside in. If you do not have an active policy with USAA, you can provide the following information and still receive a personalized SR-22 insurance quote.

  • Manufacturing date and model of your car that has to be insured
  • Full name along with your date of birth
  • Address, email address, and contact number
  • Your SSN or Taxpayer number

American Family Insurance Company

American Family Insurance company works to give their clients customized coverage options. Some of the car protection coverages they offer include:

  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Property damage liability
  • Bodily injury liability
  • Medical expense
  • Personal injury protection

Aside from the coverage options American Family offers, they have different product options for additional protection for their clients.

  • Gap: Helps pay the difference between what your car is worth and what you owe if you have a total loss.
  • Underinsured Motorist: This helps pay when another driver causes more damage than his or her insurance covers.
  • Rental Reimbursement: This type of coverage helps you pay for a rental vehicle while your car is in the shop.
  • Uninsured Motorist: This coverage protects you if you’re injured in an accident and the other driver is uninsured; it also protects you if you’re the victim of a hit-and-run or hit as a pedestrian.
  • Emergency Road Service: Use the MyAmFam app to get back on the road if your car becomes disabled. If you don’t have the app, you can call 1-800-MYAMFAM.
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment: With this coverage, you will receive help in the event of death or certain injuries caused when a vehicle has been struck regardless of who is at fault.

American Family’s SR-22

If you are already a customer with American Family, they will file an SR-22 insurance form on your behalf. To get this done, you will call your insurance agent and give them the following information:

  • American Family insurance policy number
  • Information about your violation
  • The date your license was suspended
  • How long you’re expected to file for an SR-22

If you are not an American Family Insurance customer, you may still be able to qualify for an SR-22 policy with American Family. It is important to note that American Family only offers auto insurance in 19 states.

If you need an SR-22 but you do not own a car, you could still require non-owner insurance to legally get back on the road. This would cover you, not the car you are driving. Depending on where you live, American Family could offer non-owner insurance.
