Are you currently insured?

Everyone knows car insurance is a necessity and required by law.

Further, the price of an auto policy is climbing twice as fast as the rate of inflation.

Drivers, like you, want the best car insurance companies at an affordable price.

On the other hand, insurers need to claim more than a cheap price.

They must have high customer satisfaction, a straightforward and easy claims process, and the best technology such as mobile apps.

Shopping for Auto Insurance

Shopping for car insurance can be overwhelming for buyers.

The best thing to do is follow the recommendations offered by the National Associations of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) guidelines to find a policy.

Here are the tips the NAIC and Bankrate recommends:

1. Be sure to read auto insurance company reviews.

2. Request quotes from three or more companies then compare the details.

3. Narrow down your options to 1 or 2 carriers then check with your state insurance commissioner if the company is properly licensed.

4. Call your insurer directly and ask about coverage details.

5. Once covered, don’t let your coverage lapse by missing a payment.

Best Companies by State

Listed below are the best auto insurance companies by state.

Included in the list are companies more competitive by price than feature and discounts.

For example, Esurance is rated top in California according to JD Power, but we have replaced Auto Club of Southern California since they offer a lower price with the same coverage when comparing quotes.

In many states we removed USAA as being the “best” since many drivers do not qualify.

In states like Virginia and North Dakota, with numerous former military, USAA is the best choice.

Auto Club of Southern California has been in business for over 100 years.

Though Esurance is rated higher in California according to JD Power, Auto Club of Southern California offers the same coverage with lower cost.

This makes, in our opinion, either insurer the best company in California.

There are numerous discounts offered by Auto Club of Southern California such as:

  • Affinity
  • Claims Free
  • Defensive Driver
  • Full Payment
  • Good Grades

When comparing quotes against similar companies in California, Auto Club is offering basic premiums for less.

Coupled with a broad range of discounts and mechanical breakdown coverage, they would be worth getting quotes from if you live in California.

Besides the liability coverage offered, you can get additional add-ons listed below:

  • Modified vehicle
  • Travel expense
  • Rental car
  • Non-owner liability
  • Gap coverage
  • Emergency roadside assistance

If your looking for additional companies to put on your list to get quotes in California then consider Ameriprise, Wawanesa and Safeco.

All three companies have high marks in customer satisfaction and policy offerings.

Texas Farm Bureau has consistently offered competitive rates across Texas.

The only drawback is the lack of coverage options.

Otherwise, Texas Farm Bureau specializes in basic coverage offering low rates and has many happy customers to prove it.

In JD Power’s 2019 study, TX Farm Bureau receive excellent ratings in price, billing process, and claims.

Numerous discounts are offered such as:

  • Anti-theft
  • Bundling
  • Good student
  • Defensive driver

If you are driver looking for basic coverage without special add-ons, Texas Farm Bureau is a top notch in Texas.

Other companies to put on your list of quotes would be Nationwide, Progressive, and Allstate.

All three companies were ranked well in JD Power’s study of Texas.

To find a company in Florida we had to sacrifice price slightly and go with financially stable company – MetLife.

They have been in business for over 150 years and offers longer-than-standing policy lengths at 12 months.

MetLife’s prices are slightly higher than average, however, with a suite of discounts offered you should be able to get your premium down significantly.

MetLife’s array of coverage and features include:

  • Rental car
  • Major parts replacement
  • Glass repair w/o deductible
  • Legal defense fund
  • Custom sound system coverage

If you have access to MetLife’s mobile app, you can use it to pay bills, file claims and viewing of your policy.

The most noticeable consumer complaint is the long wait time and lack of communication after filing a claim.

Online claims filingMinimal opportunities for savings with discounts
Group discounts through work for qualified employeesBelow average claims satisfaction
12 month policyPoor web experience
Excellent financials No accident forgiveness

If you reside in Florida, other companies to put on your list to get quotes is Florida Farm Bureau, Esurance, and Liberty Mutual.

Esurance and Liberty Mutual scored higher than average on JD Power’s latest study.

While Florida Farm Bureau requires membership.

The membership outweighs the low cost and quality features to consider them as one of the best auto insurance companies in Florida.

New York

New York drivers can get a low cost policy with features of a nationwide company with New York Central Mutual.

JD Power’s recent study ranked them as the best company with policy offerings, customer satisfaction, and price.

As a mutual company, NYCM pays out dividends to their customer base.

You could get cash back at the end of the year based on company profits.

Since they are a mutual company paying out dividends, their discount selection is slim.

They do have:

  • Bundling
  • Homeowner
  • Auto-pay
  • Driver training

New York Central Mutual has optional roadside assistance and rental car coverage for those who need a vehicle while theirs is being repaired.

Other coverage options include:

  • Personal injury
  • Medical payments
  • Comprehensive
  • Collision

If you do qualify for any discounts you can get from 2% to 30% off your premium.

Flexible billing optionsCustomers claim rate increase at policy renewal
24/7 support & roadside assistanceComplicated claims process

Variety of coverage options

Another company to put on your list to get quotes is Travelers.

They are ranked well in JD Power’s car insurance study with price, billing process, and policy information and interaction.

Carmoon Group, though not ranked and only 20 years old, is another company to consider.

Particularly if you weigh price heavily when looking for the best company in New York.

New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company has been selling insurance for 100 years.

Up until 2018, NJM insurance limited themselves to members only.

Now they are offering policies to the general public.

This makes NJM a top company in Pennsylvania.

Since they are a mutual company, they pay their customers dividends with some consumers reporting dividends as high as 8%.

NJM offers standard coverage such as:

  • Collision
  • No-fault protection
  • Liability
  • Personal Injury

Along with standard coverage, NJM offers an array of discounts such as:

  • Multi-car
  • Vehicle safety
  • New car
  • Paid in full
  • Electronic payment
  • Driver training

NJM was ranked 3rd, behind USAA and NYCM, for policy offerings, price and claims satisfaction according JD Power’s recent study.

If you are in the market for a new policy while looking for an excellent company in Pennsylvania, then put NJM on your list of quotes.

If you are resident of Pennsylvania, other companies to explore are Erie, Nationwide and Plymouth Rock.

Erie is ranked 1st in JD Powers recently study for customer experience and claims satisfaction.

While Nationwide and Plymouth Rock ranked 7th and 8th respectfully.

If you are looking for an excellent company in Illinois, you should explore Westfield.

They have been in business since 1864 and one of the 50 biggest property and casualty insurers in the U.S.

Westfield is ranked number one in JD Power’s recent auto insurance study in the areas of interaction, claims, and overall customer satisfaction.

Including the basic coverage, Westfield offers the following features:

  • Defensive driving

There is another feature Westfield offers called Wespack.

With Wespack you can insure a high-value home and vehicle with preferred options.

The package comes with replacement cost coverage, identify theft and roadside assistance.

The do have a high number of complaints according to BBB.org which should be something to consider while shopping for a premium with Westfield.

Policy discounts are excellent if you get themNo ridesharing coverage

Customizable packages

Since getting three or more quotes is a good idea to find lower rates, you should explore Indiana Farm Bureau, Erie and Country Financial in Illinois.

All three insurers ranked high in JD Power’s study with an emphasis on policy offerings, price and overall satisfaction.

Shelter is the best company in Ohio with excellent ratings from JD Power’s study of top companies in the central region of the U.S.

They scored 5/5 in areas of claims, price, and overall satisfaction.

The only drawback with Shelter is you have to go through an agent which means purchasing a policy online is not available.

All three insurers ranked high in AM Best’s and JD Power’s study with a focus on price, claims, and policy offerings.

Even if you are not part of Alabama Farmer’s Federaton (AFF) you should consider a top insurer in Georgia – Alfa.

We think the coverage options and price would be worth the extra cost for non-members by getting quotes from Alfa.

Alfa ranked well in JD Power’s recent study with a focus on the billing process, price, and customer satisfaction.

The only drawback is consumer reports of subpar interaction after the claims process.

Alfa insurance has been around since 1946 and offers basic liability coverage with additional features such as:

  • Comprehensive
  • Collision
  • Roadside assistance
  • Loss of use
  • Loss of income

The cost to join Alfa is $30 per year, which could easily make up the difference in discounts and benefits.

The array of discounts and offerings could bring your policy down 20% or more by adding:

  • Multi-car

North Carolina

If you are looking for a company in North Carolina with a wide array of coverage and discounts, your best choice is NC Farm Bureau.

The perks are not up to par as with a national company, but we think the low cost with NC Farm Bureau is worth it.

They ranked well in JD Power’s recent study with high marks in price and overall customer satisfaction.

NC Farm Bureau offers the basic liability package at an affordable cost.

Plus, their website is lackluster and your not able to sign up online.

Optional roadside assistanceUnable to sign up online

According to JD Power’s analysis, optional insurance companies with excellent financials are Auto-Owners and Progressive.

Both ranked excellent in the billing, policy options and price while Progressive is ranked excellent for high-risk drivers.

Michigan Farm Bureau ranked good on JD Power’s and AM Best’s recent analysis of top insurers in Michigan or north central region of the U.S.

MI Farm Bureau was founded in 1949 with a niche for farmers.

Recently, they have started to offer policies to city dwellers.

You might not get policy offerings as from nationally recognized companies, you do get low cost, decent claims service and overall customer satisfaction.

With the typical liability packages offered you can also get the following additional benefits:

  • Replacement cost

If you find you a higher than normal auto insurance quote initially with MI Farm Bureau, you could lower it substantially with the nice array of discounts offered such as:

  • Bundling
  • Vehicle safety
  • Safe driver

MI Farm Bureau offers substantial benefits to farmers and those related to farming activity.

However, the city-dwelling type is able to get excellent coverage at a cheap cost through them.

Other insurance companies to put on your bucket list of quotes in Michigan would be Country Financial and The Hartford.

Both companies ranked well in recent studies with high marks in customer satisfaction, claims and policy offerings.
