Cheapest Auto Insurance Companies by Rate & Age

Below are 16 cheapest insurers for drivers from 25 to 55 years of age.

Depending on your driving history the least expensive quotes are with Utica National, GEICO, and The Cincinnati.

Each insurer is from 26% to nearly 40% lower than the median rate for drivers of similar age and profile.

Throughout the age spectrum both Utica National and The Cincinnati are competitive.

For senior drivers, when I queried for quotes, GEICO was able to provide the lowest quotes.

Other insurers you want to put on your bucket list for savings are State Farm, Nationwide, and Westfield.

Each insurer is able to provide quotes at least 18% cheaper than the median quote for similar age drivers.

At times, and location dependent, Westfield or Nationwide are able to provide quotes as competitive as Utica National or GEICO.

Tennessee Farmers Mutual is another company to get quotes from to find savings.

There is a caveat.

Farmers Mutual requires a $25 annual fee.

However, if you conduct a study of the savings you will find the nominal fee may be worth the cost.

Best Companies by Consumer Rating, Complaints, & Rate Change over 18 Months

Below is a list of 15 insurers in Tennessee by written premiums, rate change over 12 to 18 months, complaints, and consumer rating.

Local companies such as Utica National and Westfield, and are not included since all data was not available at the time.

The rate change over a 12 to 18 month period average from 2.1% to 3.7% depending on the carrier.

Each may or may not raise your premium. It depends on determining factors conducted by insurers.

If you get a traffic violation your rate can spike significantly such as 20% to 30% or more.

The amount of complaints is included which coincides with the amount of written premiums.

For example, if a carrier has a low amount of written premiums and a high number of complaints this would throw up a flag.

This is not the case for any of the insurers below. Including Utica National and Westfield. Though they are not within the list.

The consumer ratings is data compiled for reputable online sources to get an average.

Any other data is from the Insurance Information Institute (III.org), JD Power & Associates, and AM Best.

Best Methods to Lower Your Auto Premium Bill

If you are seeking for lower auto insurance rates in Tennessee it is important to learn how to lower the likelihood of being charged more.

Here are a few things you can plan or ask about when you are comparing online car insurance quotes.

  • Request a higher deductible. If you increase your deductible from $250 to $1000 you can lower your comprehensive and collision cover by thirty percent or more.

  • Avoid a cross-over in medical coverage. If you have an existing health insurance plan get only the minimum cover you need for medical payments or forgo it altogether. Be sure to ask your health provider if the medical expenses will extend to the passengers in your vehicle if in accident. Often times this is not the case.

  • Purchase a low cost car. It is more expensive to insure a vehicle that is expensive than it does to insure a car that is least costly. If you let go of the $50,000 vehicle and get a $20,000 low profile car then your insurance rates can be reduced by twenty percent or more.

  • Don’t get cover you don’t need. If you have a vehicle that is worth $3,500 you may want to consider dropping comprehensive and collision.

  • Be sure to tell the insurer about the safety features of your vehicle. Something as minor as “automatic seatbelts” could reduce your rates by five percent or more.

  • Drive less or car pool. If you can reduce your mileage by half then you may be able to cut your rates up to $200 off your six month policy. That is $33 dollars a month which doesn’t sound like much, but over three years the amount of savings is $1200.

  • Combine everything with one insurance company. If you have a house, vehicle, boat, trailer, or any other recreational toys then you could reduce your vehicle insurance rates if you buy life, health, homeowners, and car insurance policy from the same company.

  • If you have children that can drive be sure to ask about a good grade discount. And it is cheaper to insure young adult by keeping them on the parent’s policy then having their own.

  • If you haven’t had any traffic or moving violations in the last three years ask your insurer for a discount. If they give you a discount be sure to use the advance comparison tool at the top of the page to see if any other insurance firms may offer you more of a discount. Remember, insurance firms are competing to earn you as a customer.

  • If you have a credit card call them and see if they have roadside assistance. If so, you can forgo the coverage on your policy.

Average Car Insurance Rate by City

Below are 27 mid-size cities in Tennessee with the average premium cost.
