Qualitas Insurance Company is based in San Diego, California, yet it also serves countries in Central America. This can be an enticing insurance option for Americans that frequently travel out of the country into Mexico by motor vehicle.

Qualitas is a Latin word that translates to quality, which is the core value promoted by the company.

The type of coverage offered by Qualitas is highly specialized for its customers, including a cross-border program for commercial vehicles.

Qualitas Insurance is not a company that appears in basic internet searches. If you have heard of Qualitas Insurance, it is likely because you have been referred to them through their network of insurance agents.

There is not a lot of information readily available online about the company. However, after much diligent research, this guide has been composed to provide everything you need to know about Qualitas Insurance.

This article covers how to obtain Qualitas Insurance, the types of policies they offer, the financial strength of the company, and overall customer reviews.

The Basics of Qualitas Insurance

Qualitas Insurance Company was formed in 2014 and is headquartered in San Diego, California. Their parent company, Quálitas Compañía de Seguros, was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Mexico.

The company has striven to form an insurance connection between Mexico and America, giving their customers the advantage of having a cross-border insurance policy.

You can only find Qualitas Insurance available in three states, including California, Arizona, and Texas. They do not offer car insurance in New Mexico.

However, you can obtain their insurance in three countries outside of America, including Mexico, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.

The insurance that they offer is very specialized, and you can only obtain a policy through their network of specifically trained agents. You can call their American number at 619-876-4355 to acquire an agent.

How to File Qualitas Insurance Claims

Qualitas makes it simple to file a claim for their American and Mexican customers. The first option is to call their toll-free number and speak to a claims specialist. The American claims phone number is 844-765-6380. They also have a Mexican phone number (001 885-765-6380) for their Central American customers.

The second option is to email their claims department at [email protected]

They also have an online form on their “Claims” page that you can fill out and submit.

Online Policy Management

Qualitas Insurance has a user-friendly website that can easily be toggled between English and Spanish, without having to use Google Translate.

There are very limited options for customers to make changes to their account or policy online. The only featured option is an online bill pay portal for customers and agents.

Currently, the company has no phone app available.

Policies Available Through Qualitas

The primary reason why customers choose Qualitas for their vehicle coverage is because of their cross-border commercial policies. This is geared toward truckers that haul loads between Mexico and America.

Commercial auto policies typically have higher liability coverage and can cover several employees under one policy. The types of coverage available to commercial cross-border policies include:

  • Personal injury protection
  • Medical payment
  • Uninsured motorist property and injury
  • Commercial auto liability

There are available upgrades to their commercial plan that include cargo coverage, trailer interchange, and non-owned trailer coverage.

Another specialty insurance policy available through Qualitas is their personal auto plan for vehicles that are domiciled in Mexico and licensed in California. This gives customers that travel across the border more flexibility and coverage than a standard policy that is only available in one country.

At this time, there are no available discounts that are officially disclosed from the company. There could be local discounts made available by your assigned agent, such as a multi-car discount or a good driver discount.

Overall, Qualitas offers the most basic auto insurance coverage to its customers that is highly specialized for those who frequently cross the border.

The Financial Strength of Qualitas Insurance Group

Qualitas is owned by the parent company, Quálitas Compañía de Seguros S.A. de C.V. The financial strength of their parent company is given a rating of “B+” (Good) by A.M. Best Rating Services. The company’s outlook is encouraging, and the company has been rated since October 20, 2010.

A.M. Best also revised the company’s outlook to positive in an official press release. The reason for the positive outlook is Qualitas’ continued improvement of lowering its risk assets and holding a leading position in Mexico’s auto insurance sector.

Their success is also due to the strong distribution network they have built in Mexico and America over the last several decades. They have a 31.2% market share of the Mexican auto insurance sector.

The NAIC financial report shows a very strong capital surplus of $48,721,140 which is very strong for a company with overall assets valued at $207,283,653. However, their three-year net income reveals a loss for the past two out of three years, which is a concerning statistic.

Qualitas Insurance Reviews

There are less than 100 customer reviews online. However, out of those reviews, Qualitas Insurance has been given an average rating of 3 stars, which is a below average score for auto insurance companies. However, note that these are American reviews for the company.

Most of the ratings have been accrued for the local San Diego office on Google Maps. Customers report delays in claim payouts, poor customer service, and long lead times. There are also complaints that they do not answer the phone and that many agents do not speak English.

However, there are a few reviews from Mexican customers that boast positive remarks for the company’s Mexico-based coverage.

National Complaint Index Report for Qualitas Insurance

Although the company has low reviews from customers online, their complaint index is rated at one, which is the national average.

The company only had two confirmed complaints in 2021. This is drastically lower from the previous year, which had 12 confirmed complaints on record.

Overall, personal customer reviews document several customer service issues with the company. But considering the low official complaint report on file, Qualitas seems to have a fairly good reputation for vehicle insurance.

Overall Conclusion of Qualitas Insurance

Although Qualitas Insurance is an American-based company, their ties to Mexico are strong. In addition, their parent company dominates the Mexican insurance sector, handling over 30% of the auto insurance business in the country.

Qualitas’ parent company, Quálitas Compañía de Seguros, displays strong financial strength that continues to grow through proper management and a reliable network distribution system.

It is likely that you have not heard of Qualitas Insurance unless you are specifically looking for a cross-border commercial vehicle insurance policy, or you have a vehicle domiciled in Mexico and licensed in California. They do not offer online quotes, which are only made available through their tightly knit network of insurance agents.

Although Qualitas has numerous unfavorable online reviews, the fact that their official complaint report index has a score of one is very encouraging.

If you meet the specific qualifications as noted above, or reside in Mexico, El Salvador, or Costa Rica, then an insurance plan from Qualitas Insurance could be right for you.
